Selecting the right and correct cricket bat is very crucial for any batsman. We all have heard stories about famous batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasurya, Brian Lara or Virat Kohli. All these great batsmen have always been very careful as far as their bats are concerned. Some of you must have read stories about how these players have selected their cricket bats. Like Sachin Tendular initially used to play with a heavy bat for powerful shots, but later on, due to his injuries he compromised a bit on the weight. If you get an opportunity, you must visit a workshop where bats are made. Speak to the specialist who prepares the bat, it will give you some more insight about the bats, wood, quality and their uniqueness.
Bats always differ in length, weight, and type of handle; so all the batsmen while selecting the bat, take care of the length, weight, curves, diameters, handle and most important the type of wood. Now, its very important to note that a correct bat for you depends partly on your height and partly on personal preference. Then, it also depends upon the kind of balls you are going to use for batting. Lets point out some of the key factors while selecting a right bat!
- Your height comes first while selecting a bat. To know this, get into the batting stance and hold the cricket bat just next to your front leg. The top corner of bat’s handle should be situated at the top of your pelvis. If its more than that or lower than that, then its not the right bat choice.
- Then comes the weight. Now you can choose heavier bat for more power or lighter bat for a faster swing. You should practice swings with different cricket bats with different weights until you feel really comfortable holding it.
- Handle of the bat also depends upon your personal preference. Small or long handle, it must gel with your stance and swings perfectly.
